Zohran Mamdani Vows a 'New Era' for NYC in First Address

During an first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” America's largest city, promising “a fresh chapter” and an audacious start to his administration.

A Historic Figure

The young political star, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A opportunity of this kind is rare and even more uncommon is it that the public whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Rejecting counsel to be modest, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will rule boldly and broadly.”

Adhering to Democratic Socialist Principles

Mamdani openly embraced his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my convictions for worry of being called radical,” he said to loud cheers.

The ceremony was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over political establishments.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

• Subsidized daycare
• No-cost bus transit
• A cap on rents for about 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these initiatives may prove difficult to secure. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Challenges

The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has sought to address these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as surprisingly productive.

The Fundamental Tests of Governing

In the end, New York mayors are judged on their ability in delivering essential functions: sanitation, reducing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and ensuring smooth subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
