Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when numerous of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
